The Centrale Lyon

Founded in 1857 near Écully, Lyon, L’École Centrale de Lyon is renowned for engineering and design education. When the school’s aging restaurant required renovation, the task was entrusted to Sylvain Roubaud of JADE Architects in Villeurbanne.

The goal was to create a warm, welcoming space that complements the building’s high ceilings. Wood was chosen as the primary material, shaping both the ceiling and an imposing mezzanine wall that evokes the appearance of a wooden cube. This cohesive design approach enhances the space’s character while maintaining a minimalist aesthetic.

Strategically placed lighting fixtures preserve the rich ambiance, while large bay windows flood the area with natural light, fostering a bright, relaxing atmosphere for students. This thoughtful design elevates the dining experience while harmonizing with the school’s architectural identity.
