Wood Ceilings Enhance Koning Willem II College

Hunter Douglas Architectural proudly announces its role in the transformation of the Koning Willem II College in Tilburg. In partnership with architecten|en|en, the project features 1,200 m² of custom solid wood linear ceilings, made from thermally modified fraké in three distinct slat sizes. This bespoke solution helped realise the architectural vision for the school’s transformation.

Design meets functionality

The renovation and expansion included a new school building and two sports halls, harmonising with existing structures while modernising facilities. The updated spaces are designed to support future-ready education.

Custom wood solutions

Hunter Douglas Architectural’s Derako® solid wood linear system, featuring slats in three sizes (18×66, 18×93, and 18×120 mm) was installed on both flat and curved surfaces, adding a dynamic, flowing aesthetic. The use of wood emphasised fluid connections throughout the design, particularly in key spaces like the atrium and a bridge connecting the sports halls.

Sustainability in focus

Aligned with sustainability goals, the design incorporates solar panels and energy-efficient features seamlessly integrated into the building. Collaborating with MTD Landschapsarchitecten, the project also introduced green spaces, strengthening ties between the Stappegoor and Groenewoud neighbourhoods.

Hunter Douglas Architectural’s contribution of warm, textured wood ceilings unified new and existing structures, creating a cohesive and future-proof learning environment.
