Alexander station

Hunter Douglas Architectural created a custom BXD multi-panel system for the ceiling and walls of the Rotterdam Alexander station, enhancing both indoor and outdoor spaces with high-quality acoustic solutions and excellent technical support. Opened in 1968, Rotterdam Alexander station serves as a vital transport hub on the busy route between Utrecht and Rotterdam. The renovation and reconstruction, which took two years and concluded in June 2020, aimed to modernize the facility while maintaining safety and acoustic comfort.

Different widths and depths
The BXD multi-panel system features box-shaped panels available in eight different widths and depths, allowing for versatile combinations. At this station, four widths (30, 80, 130, and 180 mm) and two depths (box and deep box) were utilized. The specially designed HD7306 brown panels evoke the Dutch national color, offering a warm tone that is neither overly bright nor shiny.

Critical requirements
Safety and acoustic performance were critical requirements for the ceiling system. The architects decided against using wood due to fire safety concerns, opting instead for a steel construction that meets stringent fire protection standards. Additionally, the design prioritized noise reduction to minimize echo in the bustling station environment.

Acoustic testing
Before installation, the chosen panel layout underwent acoustic testing. The BXD multi-panels are designed with a 20 mm gap that allows for sound-absorbing fillers and optional perforation, resulting in an absorption capacity of Aw = 0.75, contributing to a more pleasant acoustic atmosphere. The panels can be easily dismantled for maintenance, ensuring unrestricted access to the ceiling cavity.

Three-dimensional look
The BXD system also serves as wall cladding, creating a cohesive, three-dimensional look throughout the station. Integrated Luxalon® Light Lines enhance functionality, guiding travelers, especially in low light. Outdoors, a gray linear multiPanel was installed on the platform to withstand the elements, incorporating a special surface treatment and a safety system to ensure durability.

Gateway to the city
As a gateway to the city, the architectural design of the station is crucial. While functionality is paramount, the ceiling and roof can also showcase distinctive features. The interplay between architectural aesthetics and practical requirements is evident in the project, where the ceiling system fulfills both acoustic and safety needs while unifying various modes of transportation under one roof.
